Linux – Ubuntu – Your alternative to windows
Recently I discovered an alternate non-propriety software, which is open source and ever since I have been using it. The truth is I like it it works fine and does everything Windows does. I have it on my desktop as the only OS and on my laptop I have dual booted it with Windows as some of my work related software are there I am sure I will find some alternative software for those too.
When I started using Windows in the late 80’s it was difficult and I had to go through the different stages of learing, there was a learning curve when I look back at it. The fact that here too the process is the same, but you need to recognize it, that will help you in integrating into this OS sooner. At first linux – ubuntu was a bit uncomfortable, but once I learned how to navigate around managing is getting a lot comfortable.
I feel strongly that there are alternate softwares available and it being free should be promoted. Just imagine if you have more than one computer in your house how much will you spend for the different software you need.
Monopoly is not good, there should be healthy competition and more options available. New developers should be promoted.
Right now on my ubuntu computers I have open office, firestarter, lokkit, firefox and a number of other software to get me by and they are working pretty well. Just imagine if I have to buy all these software for every computer in my home. I am using this as an opportutny to learn more about computers and a pass time.
If you have an old system lying around it should work fine you can get it up and running quite soon.
The minumum requirements can be obtained from any ubuntu forums just google it. You would be amazed at the kind of help you would get.
I believe if you have minumum 256 MB RAM 5 Gig hard disk and any pentium II or III processor IBM or a Mac you would have a new system up and running.
Currently I am using my desktop as a kind of first line of defence. I have firewalled the connection in ubuntu. I have 2 network adapters. My laptop is connected to the second adapter. This arrangement works very well for me. If I want to move around in the house my wireless set up is up and running and I can easily switch.
It is about three months since I am using ubuntu and I am loving it. At firest I tried conneting the a dial up that one worked well too. For safe web surfing this is a great choice as virus and spyware are almost nil. Experience it yourself install and enjoy.
